Some spaces wait quietly for the right vision. Barrio Nopal Park in Tucson, Arizona was one of them. What was once an open, underutilized lot has been transformed into a vibrant community destination and the result is something truly special.
A Desert-Inspired Vision
This project came together through a collaborative partnership, with every element carefully selected to honor the desert environment and the community it serves. From the vibrant green palette to the buttercup and plum accents and charming desert cacti, the playground draws families in from the moment they arrive. The design team worked closely with community stakeholders to ensure the finished space felt authentic, rooted, and unmistakably theirs.
Playground Structures Built for Adventure
At the heart of the playground equipment is the BeachComber structure – a wavy, wonderfully interactive centerpiece featuring nets, belts, and a banked Alpine Slide. Originally rooted in coastal inspiration, the structure was reimagined into a desert-themed experience that feels completely at home in its surroundings. A Curva Spinner and two double slides round out the experience, giving kids plenty of ways to stay active, engaged, and coming back for more. The combination of structures supports a wide range of play styles — from thrill seekers launching down the Alpine Slide to children who prefer the quiet challenge of navigating the nets at their own pace. Together they create a layered play environment where there is always something new to try and something to work toward.

Shaping the Land, Shaping the Experience
One of the most distinctive elements of this outdoor play space was the topography. Creating the right landscape required careful planning and real expertise – transforming a flat lot into a dynamic play environment with built-in hills and obstacles that challenge children in unexpected ways. The varying terrain gives kids something rare in a playground: a sense of genuine discovery. Navigating changes in elevation builds coordination, confidence, and spatial awareness. Every visit feels a little different depending on how you move through it.
The finished space meets ADA requirements, ensuring it is welcoming and accessible to every child and family who walks through.
Play as a Foundation
Play is how children learn to take risks, build resilience, and connect with each other and the world around them. Designing a space that honors that — that invites every child in and gives them room to grow — is work we are deeply proud of. We are honored to have helped bring this community’s vision to life.
